lyra messier—first name real, last name fake—makes dance music for the introverted. The Flemish solo musician’s hypnotic, off-kilter beats are infused with the soaring riffs of her progressive rock and metal heroes (Steven Wilson, Bring Me the Horizon).
New album LP7 sees her expand her influences to Dutch and Hebrew hip-hop, resulting in the anxious introspection of “Doomscroll” and scathing political commentary of “Passive Activist”. Elsewhere, “Postcards for Your Echo Chamber” is her most straightforwardly catchy rock song to date. One thing is certain: she’ll keep you on the edge of your seat. You might want to strap in.
